Exhibitions Addressing Religion in Contemporary Art
1930–present
This is an expanded, continually updated version of the appendix in my book The Invisibility of Religion in Contemporary Art (University of Notre Dame Press, 2025). It presents a semi-comprehensive list of multi-artist exhibitions over the past several decades that, in one way or another, consciously and significantly address the relations between modern and contemporary art and religion (and/or related topics of God, transcendence, spirituality, the sacred, the holy, etc.). These exhibitions are not necessarily endorsing any religious tradition or concept, but they are exploring them in some significant way (sometimes oppositionally). This list is thus meant to cast a broad net, gathering a wide range of examples and approaches relevant to the general topic of this book. This list is necessarily selective, but it attempts to include the most definitive and influential exhibitions, as well as several that deserve more attention.
With a handful of exceptions, each exhibition included here meets the following criteria: (1) The exhibition was presented sometime after 1970. (2) The exhibition included two or more artists working in the twentieth or twenty-first century (i.e., after 1900). (3) The exhibition produced significant and accessible documentation, usually in the form of an exhibition catalogue, a substantial booklet, or a dedicated website (there are a handful of exceptions, each noted with an *). And (4) the exhibition carries some measure of international “prominence” in one or more of the following ways: (a) it was presented at or in direct partnership with an internationally recognized art organization (usually museums but in some cases major commercial galleries); (b) it included artworks by one or more internationally recognized artist(s); (c) it was curated by one or more internationally recognized curator(s); or (d) the exhibition catalogue included an essay by one or more internationally recognized scholar(s). [These criteria of “prominence” inevitably involve somewhat arbitrary decisions, and they tend to reinforce established canons and their patterns of inclusion and exclusion. Nevertheless, these criteria are helpful to the extent that they directly reveal counter-examples within the existing canons of modern and contemporary art.]
The following list is organized in descending chronological order from the present to 1970, according to the date when each exhibition first opened. If an exhibition traveled to multiple locations, or if the catalogue was published later than the exhibition, there will be only one entry based on the date of the original opening. In cases where an exhibition’s official documentation displays the exhibition title in a language other than English and in English, both versions of the title are provided with a forward slash (/) between them. In cases where the title, or a portion of the title, appears only in a language other than English, my English translation is provided in [square brackets].
*This list is ongoing and occasionally updated. If you spot any inaccuracies, or if you would like to suggest additional entries, please contact me to make a suggestion.
