Jonathan Anderson, Construction (no.6), 2009, oil on oak panel with unpainted structure, 48 × 72 in. (private collection)

The structural framing of a single-story home fills this panel and touches its outer edges, subtly associating the construction of a building with the construction of a painting. The structure itself is unpainted, allowing the bare wooden panel on which the painting is made to stand in for the wooden structural framing of the home. The figural ground beneath this building has been created by following the same wood grain of the panel that is the material ground of the painting.
