Jonathan Anderson, Contraction, 2007, oil on panel, 21 × 15 in. (private collection)

The first mark made on this wooden panel was the scribble of pink oil paint. A representational image was then painted around that initial scribble, depicting a gated orange grove. There is only one layer of paint but two orders of mark-making intermingled: one corresponding to the flatness of the panel and one corresponding to the pictorial volume of the garden.
