Jonathan Anderson, Foundation, 2005, oil on canvas, 90 × 66 in.
This painting depicts the sealed doorway of a defunct organization undergoing renovation. The locked green doors echo the shape of the canvas itself, creating a representational space that opens into what seems to be a dead end, a closure. Even so, this shallow space remains “open,” not only laterally in ways that can’t be observed but also in light falling through scaffolding and in stylized silver raindrops falling across the surface of the canvas.
