Jonathan Anderson, Headstone, 2007, oil on panel, 14½ × 10⅞ in.

The first mark made on this wooden panel was the green pool in the center. A representational image was then painted around that initial scribble, depicting an graveyard in Italy. There is only one layer of paint but two orders of mark-making intermingled: one corresponding to the flatness of the panel and one corresponding to the pictorial volume of the cemetery.
