Jonathan Anderson, Impasse, 2007, oil on panel, 16⅞ × 13 in.
The first mark made on this wooden panel was the scribble of yellow oil paint. A representational image was then painted around that initial scribble, depicting the façade of the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi. There is only one layer of paint but two orders of mark-making intermingled: one corresponding to the flatness of the panel and one corresponding to the pictorial volume of the church building.
