Books and Articles Addressing (or Relevant to)
Religion in Modern and Contemporary Art
1900–present

This list provides a general bibliography for the overlapping fields of study pertaining to “religion,” “theology,” and “spirituality” in the history of twentieth- and twenty-first-century art. It casts a wide net, including sources from many different perspectives and (occasionally) some sources that have strong relevance to the subject but aren’t specifically focused on art since 1900. Unlike most bibliographies, this list is constructed in descending chronological order according to the date the work was first published (rather than alphabetical according to author)—an ordering that serves a historiographical purpose similar to the other lists in these appendices. Where available, the English translation or newest edition of each source will be the cited source, but the entry will appear according to the date the work was first published in its original language. Some individual essays from exhibition catalogues are included here, but for a full list of the catalogues themselves, see here.

*This list is ongoing and occasionally updated. If you spot any inaccuracies, or if you would like to suggest additional entries, please contact me to make a suggestion.
